Findings from the Community Garden
These are nots and things I need to remember, but it’s a bit rambling: Jenny has headed the Healthy Savannah/Excel garden project since the beginning. Her initial idea was easily adopted and the group has since split into teams which Jenny unofficially oversees, ensuring progress is made as planned. The garden space is placed prominently near the entrance to the community center, which is...
Community Garden Meeting
The community garden brainstorming meeting at the city’s offices was GREAT. I met some people that are involved in making Savannah healthier and more knowledgeable about their food intake … people that care and are trying to change things. Discovered that there is in fact a community garden already, and it’s run by UGA’s cooperative extension. And it’s FREE to use....

This presentation outlines some changes in focus for the future of the project.
Heritage Organic Farms
Is the only CSA, farm-fresh source of directly distributed fruits and vegetables in southeastern Georgia. The best part is not only their organic and low-impact growing techniques, but the are community oriented, educate and work with other farms, and provide farm share to area residents. No wait, the best part is that on FRIDAY I get my first box of veg! Go see for yourself!

Check out the research findings presentation I delivered to my class last week. Response was strong and my excitement was well articulated. This week is dedicated to expanding the initial findings and solidifying a direction. (It might take a few minutes to download)

Georgia Organics' Local Food Guide →
The best resource I’ve found on small scale farming and food,so far.

For your perusing pleasure here’s the discussion collateral for my interviews. As they are only an outline, the questions serve as a guide for me not just as a strictly structured Q & A session.
Interview Status
I met with a key individual and discussed some opinions about the community, environment and feasibility of eating locally. The interview was very successful, and I took a lot away from the meeting. We’re planning to meet up again to talk, and I’ll be getting involved in community gardening initiatives in the Savannah area!
Week 2
katieinglis:
Starting the second week means I’m finally finishing the pac choi and kohlrabi, which were so big I really didn’t think I’d eat them all. I made risotto last night for Bethany and I, and it was unusual but tasty. She’s just getting into trying new foods, so it was deemed a success when I got her to eat a plateful. Polk’s market is still the best place to find regional foods, so I...
Day 4 or 5
katieinglis:
Today I realized that the sacrifices endured while eating local food are not the foods themselves but the time that I don’t get to spend eating with my friends, socializing with people or being spontaneous.”
The food is great. I’m learning loads about new vegetables and preparing things I’ve never made before, and I like experimenting . But after what, like four days, I didn’t want...
Getting an In
Yesterday I met an incredible person at Brighter Day and I can’t wait to interview her. I was looking at some produce, doing a little observation, and I overheard her telling someone very knowledgeably about a lot of obscure produce. When she was done, I asked her if she could tell me about the pac choi and kohlrabi I was looking at, and we had a great conversation about the city trying to...
Day 3
katieinglis:
Last night I made shrimp risotto with local shrimps and baby vidalias, and it was great. Today I went to pick up some food for the next few days (or today really) and I found florida orange juice, local mixed greens, pac choi and kohl rabi (I don’t know what these even are or how to cook them), and spent $22. Can you believe that? It was the pac choi-it was so heavy it came to almost...
Initial Impressions
Two days ago I spent three hours milling around Polk’s Market, the Fresh Market and Publix, looking for local and regional foods, talking to store clerks, and getting hungry. At Polk’s I met the owners Jerry and Diane and had some nice conversations. Polk’s gets all their produce and jarred goods from farmers around the region and take a lot of pride in their offerings. Jerry...
At Your Mark
katieinglis:
I went shopping for local food today, in combination with the research. Food is expensive, but I guess I should suck it up because if I lived before WWII I would have spent half my income on food instead of less that 10% like most people today.
Tomorrow I’m going to learn how to bake bread without a bread maker or a dough kneader.
I miss Philly food. This would be easier there.

Now Look at This SavoryFood →
I decided that as of tomorrow, I’ll be on a regional food plan, where the only things I’ll eat will be grown in the neighborhood. Eating completely locally, as in Chatham County or even Georgia proper isn’t really viable in the winter. The closest farm is 61 miles away and there are no dairies around (anywhere) for butter or cheese. By eating regionally I’ll be able to find...

– A clerk at Brighter Day told me when I asked if there were any local dairy products available.

The Start of a Long Journey
Opportunities exist in Savannah, Georgia for an enriching culture of locally grown and consumed food that maintain a sustainable and community-centered economy. Design opportunities exist to better define the ambiguities of this domain and highlight areas of opportunity upon which a successful new service could be developed. This blog will be dedicated to showing the progress of this project,...
